bio

I saw the saxophone guy in the muppet show when I was seven. So I wanted to play saxophone. I have been playing it ever since. I can't put my finger on it, but it has to have something, that makes me go on playing and exploring it in all it's possibilities.

I started having private lessons at home once a week. Besides that I was playing in a local marching band. My teacher was an interesting guy. With only one eye left, he learned to play the saxophone in eight days as he was imprisoned in Russia. His life experience gave me great inspiration.

Some years later my mother married a jazz musician. So I naturally started exploring New Orleans Jazz. I still find it to be great music! Did I mention I come from the countryside? Can you imagine how difficult it is to find a good teacher there? But I managed to do so and met some wonderful people like Cathrin Wenzel and Stephan Geiger. I enrolled at the Frankfurt music university to take lessons with Achim Rinke-Bachmann, a classical saxophone player. I was sixteen by then and didn't have a clue about classical saxophone. To be honest, I wanted to have jazz lessons but there was no teacher for that at the university where I was studying. Somehow this turned out to be a very valuable and precious experience. This stuff was so hard to play that it made me practice a lot.

Have you ever heard of the "Hessen Youth Jazz Orchestra"? No? Than you should check it out. This is a formidable youth Big Band from Hessen, the federal district where I come from. We toured many countries all over the world, recorded CD's and played with so many world class musicians as featured soloists - it was just breathtaking!

What happened then? Shortly (you may find a full list of awards, CD's etc below): I studied saxophone. First in Mainz (Steffen Weber), then in Berlin (prof. Peter Weniger) and now in New York City (Tony Moreno, Chris Potter). In my own music I am dealing with microtonality a lot. I play the flute or the clarinet. My main project is a band called "Besaxung" (www.besaxung.com).

quotes

"An excellent musician with a keen imagination and very advanced abilities on the saxophone. I am sure he will continue to grow." (Chris Potter)

"He has proven himself to be a world class performer. His ability to absorb complex rhythmic and harmonic forms and perform them so organically and fluid is amazing. He is definitely able to develop a career here in NYC. His level is that high. He will continue to grow and be an important member of the Jazz community." (Tony Moreno)

"Uniqueness is perhaps the quality that jazz musicians strive for most relentlessly. Philipp Gerschlauer seems to have discovered this quality in an amazingly short period of time. Both his approach to the saxophone, and his writings, are loaded with originality.
I have heard many musicians using microtones in their approach to playing jazz. But NEVER have I heard a system with such a defined language as Philipp has put into place." (Greg Cohen)

about Besaxung

Jazzpodium

"The music of this typically instrumentated Jazzquartet is no less than exciting, powerful, fascinating, harsh and fast. Besaxung draws a big bow between tradition and modernity… the impressive maturity of the compositions and improvisations is astonishing by every listening. "

Hessian Broadcasting

"succinct and firm statements, short hits, surprising breaks and a tendency to explode… this results in a convincing band statement which is seldom found in a band of mid twenties."

"Besaxung is not a quartet of talents trying to find and define themselves through jazz history exclusively. It's music on the peak of time."

teaching

Private lessons are available via Skype. Just send me an email and we will figure out the details easily.
